Mashable, CNET, Chris Pirillo Warn of Urgent Twitter Phishing Scam

by Alan Underkofler on January 3, 2009

Early today I started seeing all the warnings of an urgent twitter phishing scam.  Specifically, a Twitter virus is being spread by a direct message talking about some kind of “funny blog about you” or “Hey, I found a website with your pic on it… LOL check it out here http:// twitterblogaccesslogins. com/login”.  This message seems to be coming from multiple hacked accounts.

As the day went on, Twitter added this warning at the top of the Twitter feed “Hey!  If you get an email masquerading as a DM with a link, it could be ‘Phishing’.”  Twitter’s Status blog posted about 2 hours ago regarding “Don’t Share Your Secret Info!”

Chris Pirillo took the time to track down the phishing domain and has reported them to OpenDNS via PhishTank.com.  Not sure what this will do but it’s nice to know Chris is taking action for all of us!

Rafe Needleman has a great post “Twitter phishing scam may be spreading” on CNET.  He talked about the warning appearing on Twitter but if you use a Twitter client like Twhirl you will not see any warning.

Check out the post by Pete Cashmore on Mashable talking about how this can actually be a good thing.  Twitter may be coming-of-age!  It’s only a matter of time before Twitter becomes so popular it warrants being attacked.  It seems the time has come!

As I was writing this post, Twitter Attraction Co-blogger, Angie Swartz, called to inform me that the DM had just hit her blackberry.  In the last 15 minutes Twitter Phishing has showed up 81 times on search.twitter.com.  So, while we all love to see blog post’s about us or check out our own pictures, it seems for the next few days we need to be a little more cautious!

The text sounds very similar to the recent Facebook virus. It worked so well, they used the same basis for the twitter attack.
